BIO / CV
Gianna Christella Hayes is a multi-disciplinary artist and facilitator working alongside plants, people, images and memories. At the core of her practice, Gianna's work is a meditation on intention, alchemy, ceremony, and memory.
Through the use of plant matter, minerals, intention, and slow processes, Gianna unveils the pallets of our natural world. The ritualistic rhythm of gathering, bundling, steaming, and infusing fibers with plant matter unveils an abstract language of place and memory. Through this alchemical process, she inhabits the intersection of ecology, science, art, and healing, delving into the interconnectedness and care that emerges through a deep connection to our plant kin.
As a facilitator, Gianna cultivates immersive and playful botanical dye workshops where she invites participants to embark on a symbolic and tangible journey of caring for the places and beings with which they co-create. She invites us to embrace a deep appreciation for the wisdom inherent in nature, encouraging us to forge connections with our ancestral knowledge and to honor the interconnected web that sustains us all.
Gianna was born on Tongva Land in Los Angeles, California and currently lives, tends and explores on Darug land in Western Sydney. With a spirit of acknowledgment and gratitude, she endeavors to co-create in harmony with the Indigenous stewardship that has long nurtured and protected this Earth since the early whispers of time.
I acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which I work and live across. I pay my deepest respects to Elders past, present, and emerging, and recognise the deep knowledge and connections to land, water and sky held by First Nations Peoples.
