MORE ABOUT ME

Gianna Christella Hayes is a  Los Angeles, Tongva Land-born, Sydney, Dharug Land-based Los Angeles-born, Sydney-based artist. Their multidisciplinary practice spans textiles, film, and immersive installations, often incorporating soil, seeds, plants, and botanical dyes to explore identity, migration, and the reclamation of ancestral diasporic practices disrupted by colonial powers.

Hayes’s practice examines the entanglements of human displacement and ecological disruption, extending from ancestral memory and ethnobotanical inquiry into acts of ritual and preservation that reframe fractured relationships to land as spaces of remembrance, care, and future possibility. Hayes frequently engages with plant species whose histories have been shaped by colonial exploitation, uncovering the parallel narratives of these plants both before and after colonisation.

Hayes has served as a nature pedagogy educator leading youth in nature play immersions, alongside being the founder of Hilum Earth — a living archive and embodied research lab that takes shape through creative botanical workshops and seed swap initiatives to celebrate the interconnection of plants, people and memories.
